Medicaid, the federal and state health insurance program for the poor, requires states to provide dental coverage for children but not adults. While dental care often is seen as routine, the poor often go without any care for years or even decades. In New Hampshire, the state is spending $33.4 million over 12 months to provide dental care to its 88,000 Medicaid recipients. Andy Beshear pressed ahead with emergency regulations ensuring that about 900,000 Kentuckians would continue having access to dental care after the Republican-led legislature rejected his proposal. A mother of five, she figured dental care would take away from spending on her children.

A new study shows that access to SNAP benefits reduces the racial gap in food insecurity. Black and multiracial households have had higher food insecurity rates than white households over the last 20 years. For those not enrolled in SNAP, Black and multiracial households respectively had a 52% and 42% higher risk of food insecurity than white households. When accounting for household characteristics, Black households enrolled in SNAP had a lower rate of food insecurity than white households.

Heather Taylor was a mortuary makeup artist who gained 500,000 TikTok followers by sharing her work. Taylor posted videos about going to mortuary school and how makeup is applied on the dead. She was inspired by death work after her father passed and she wasn't able to reconstruct his face. She found the death industry appealing because she always had a "dark persona" and an "attraction to darker things." Her mortuary school ended up launching an online class because of the popularity of her TikToks.
Four food banks told Reuters that demand is up between 46 and 125% since last spring, and that visits to their pantries are as high or higher than they were at the height of the pandemic. "But for food banks, we're still deep in a crisis." Food banks also feel the pinch: two organizations told Reuters their food costs are up 25 to 30% this year compared to last spring. Democrats in Congress negotiated a compromise with Republicans to end the benefits in exchange for a new summer food program for children. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in December that it would allocate an additional $1 billion to food banks to meet rising demand.
